Hot springs in Montana

14 springs across the mountainous western third of the state, 0 free. Montana built its hot water into lodges and plunges a century ago, and plenty of them still keep the pool open into the evening.

A wide river and snow-capped peaks near Livingston, Montana, on a clear day.

Montana's hot springs follow the mountains down the western third of the state, and most were turned into lodges and plunges about a century ago: Chico in the Paradise Valley, Fairmont near Anaconda, Boulder, Quinn's on the Clark Fork, Symes in the town of Hot Springs, Bozeman Hot Springs on the edge of town. Many still have a motel or lodge attached and a pool open into the evening. The next spring is often a day's drive away, so the old pattern still works well. Soak, sleep, and drive on in the morning.

Wild springs are rarer here than next door in Idaho. The famous one, Jerry Johnson, is actually across the Idaho line on the Lolo Pass road, about an hour from Lolo.

Bozeman and Missoula each have springs inside an hour, and their city pages sort everything by drive time. Elsewhere, read the season line, because a few smaller lodges close between the ski and summer seasons, and the passes between them are winter roads.

In the small Big Hole Valley town of Jackson, this lodge pairs a chemical-free geothermal pool at 100-106 degrees with rooms, a restaurant and a bar, which covers most of what a long valley evening needs. Two rules decide the trip. Children five and under are not allowed in the hot spring, by state law, and the lodge says so in capitals. And the property is closed to the public midweek, with the pool open Monday only from 8 to 10am. Plan for Thursday through Sunday, when it opens by 10am and stays open until 11pm. Adults pay $12, children $9.

The indoor pool runs 104-106 degrees in summer, and the larger outdoor pool that runs 78-85 in summer and cools to 74-78 in winter, so in January the real soak is indoors. Day passes are first-come, first-served, with adults at $16 and under-5s free. It's open until midnight on Sunday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and until 10pm otherwise. The water stays below 100 in summer and climbs to 106 in winter, and the pool is drained nightly and pressure-washed weekly without chemicals. Weekend evenings bring live music from the dome. A note on these listings

We last checked every spring here on 19 September 2026, against the page of whoever runs it or manages the land, and that page is linked under each entry. Springs are grouped by what they are rather than ranked, since a resort pool and a creekside rock tub aren't competing for the same afternoon. Where the fee says "See the operator's prices", the price list changes often enough that you're better off reading it there.
